The great promises of God seem to be only partially fulfilled. The work of the kingdom seems to be moving very slowly, if at all. Unbelievers all around God’s people seem to be having a better time of it. The people of God are distracted, discouraged & half-hearted in their commitment to the work God has given them to do. For many believers today, that describes our situation and the state of our hearts, just as it describes the situation and the hearts of God’s people in Haggai’s day in the 6th century BC soon after the return from exile. The call of Haggai, and of this little book, is to catch again the vision of God’s purposes for his people and the world – and then to get to work doing wholeheartedly what he has given us to do.
